American doctors for the first time in history began to introduce patients into suspended animation

And a group of scientists from the United States began to use the artificial introduction of people into this state in order to save their lives.

Not so long ago in the United States passed the test of a newinnovative technology that quickly cools patients with serious injuries in order to gain more time for surgery. Doctors from the University of Maryland in Baltimore first brought people into a state of suspended animation, which, according to The Guardian, was reported at a recent symposium held by the New York Academy of Sciences.

The process itself involves rapid cooling.brain to a temperature of less than 10 degrees Celsius by replacing the patient's blood with ice-cold saline. Typically, the solution is pumped directly into the aorta, the main artery, which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Officially known as “emergency preservation and resuscitation,” this procedure will be tested on people who receive such catastrophic injuries that they are threatened with fatal bleeding, and people who have suffered from a serious heart attack and simply cannot be delivered as soon as possible to medical institution.

Patients who often become victimsstab wounds, gunfights, or massive heart attacks usually have less than a 5% chance of survival, says Dr. Samuel Tisherman of the University of Maryland in Baltimore, one of the authors of the work. At least one patient has already completed this procedure.

Quick cooling of victims is intended fordecrease in brain activity to an almost complete stop and deceleration of the physiology of the patient. This is enough to give surgeons precious tens of minutes to conduct an operation. One of the goals of the American study is to reduce the damage to the brain that patients often suffer from serious injuries associated with blood loss or damage to internal organs. However, one of the complications of this procedureIt is that the cells of patients can be damaged as they warm up after surgery in order to remove them from the state of suspended animation. In the course of further experiments, the results of 20 men and women will be compared, some of which will receive standard emergency care, and some will be immersed in a state of suspended animation. The test should pass before the end of the year, but conclusions are expected only in 2020.

It is worth noting that the new technology is fundamentallydifferent from the usual anesthesia and artificial coma. The fact is that the last two manipulations are carried out, as a rule, with the help of medications. Of course, there are ways to introduce artificial coma using cooling, but in this case, so-called “general cooling” of the body from the outside is used, and not by introducing frozen plasma, which was done by American scientists.
