Amazon opens access to its quantum computer

Technology giants like Google and IBMhave long struggled to become the first company to create a truly affordable quantum computer. Nevertheless, the well-known company of Jeff Bezos, Amazon is not in a hurry to get into this battle. Instead, they simply take and run a program to access their quantum computer. Unfortunately, so far not everyone can use the technology of the future, but the fact that this happened is simply amazing. A few years ago it was impossible to even dream of such an opportunity.

What Amazon quantum computing service is capable of

The new service is called Amazon Braket and itthe first attempt of such a large company to turn the nascent field of quantum computing into a service that you can access through the Internet.

Amazon Braket is completely controlled by youservice with an unprecedented level of security and data encryption. In it, you can fully control the work of quantum computing. - Amazon explains in its official address on the Verge portal.

But there is a small snag. “You” in this case does not mean a specific person, but Amazon's corporate customers. At the same time, the service itself makes it possible to use not only ready-made algorithms, but also create new developments. Quantum computers are able to perform calculations much faster than traditional supercomputers - this is due to the fact that their quantum bits (qubits) can exist in several quantum states at the same time, while the "classical" bits are only in two - zero and one, respectively.

The service will allow a wide range of people and companiesgain experience with qubits and quantum computing. You can create and test circuits in our environment, and then run them on a real quantum computer.

But Amazon does not stop there. Representatives of the company also claim that they are creating a "center for quantum computing", in other words, a real laboratory where quantum computers will be assembled. It will be located next to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The director of quantum computing confirmed to Wired that Amazon is also working on “other quantum equipment.”

Why do we need quantum computing?

As already said, theoretically quantumcomputers can compute much faster precisely because qubits have much greater potential. If you believe the statements of other companies (but do not believe them it makes no sense), then the performance gain during calculations can increase very significantly. Not so long ago, Google announced that with the help of its 54-qubit quantum Sycamore, they were able to successfully make a calculation that would take 10,000 years from the most powerful ordinary supercomputer to date. But quantum computers are extremely expensive inproduction. That is why Amazon (as well as Microsoft) are trying to turn them into a public service. Of course, so far only large corporations can use them. But after all, nothing prevents companies, if successful, from expanding the scope and "letting" you and me there.
