Acer Swift 5 (2019) review: lightweight and versatile laptop

Widget from SocialMart

Acer seeks to make its laptops at any thin and light as possible. Because of this, I had to face the strangest and most unfortunate compromises. Therefore, I immediately had doubts when Acer Swift 5 (2019) was called the lightest laptop in the world with a 15-inch display.

I came to the test version of Swift 5 costabout 65,000 rubles, which received an Intel Core i5-8265U processor with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal PCIe memory. The price for such a laptop is not at all budget, however, the laptop really turned out to be extremely light.

    Design and construction

As for weight, the Acer Swift 5 (2019)really claims to be the lightest laptop. While he has a full-size 15.6-inch IPS display, the laptop weighs just under 1 kg. In the hands of the device is almost not felt and it is very unusual at first. It seems that inside this notebook only air, but it is not.

The new Swift 5 (2019) made it so easy at the expense ofA new magnesium-lithium alloy and a thin, relatively durable case. Compared with the sturdy and protected by the standard MIL-SPEC-810G laptop ZenBook 15 UX533, which is the thinnest, Swift 5 does not seem to be compact, but it is much easier.

Alas, but the keyboard and cover of this Swift 5bend even with a slight pressure. To emphasize how light the laptop turned out, I’ll compare it to a much smaller Dell XPS 13. It’s a very tiny laptop, but it was harder.

Acer Swift screen hinge pretty tightopens, so you have to use both hands. It is strange that when typing the display will still fluctuate a bit. The device doesn’t make us doubt the quality of the assembly, but competitors are still stronger.

Although the updated Swift 5 was created with an emphasis onmaximum compactness, it still remains a full-sized laptop. Its thickness is 1.6 cm, comparable to ZenBook 15 and XPS 15. But, the frames around the screen turned out to be thicker, with a relatively low ratio of panel to body - 87.6%.

In terms of design, Swift 5 (2019) is also not tryingstand out. It is almost entirely silver and only the frames around the display are black. Nothing extra. When compared with its closest competitors, the ZenBook 15 and XPS 15 look more interesting. Acer has made its ultrabook too conservative, but it’s more of a taste.

Although the Acer laptop is relatively thin, the manufacturer managed to equip it with a sufficient set of ports and connectors. On the left are: 2 × USB-A 3.1, full-size HDMI and USB-C 3.1 Gen 2. Perhaps Thunderbolt 3 is not enough to connect an external display or video card.

    Keyboard and touchpad

Acer Swift 5 (2019) has the most typicalKeyboard island type with one level of illumination. The key travel is large, with tangible feedback and a clear click. Pressing does not require much effort. For long work with the text, this keyboard is just perfect. If you want to get something with an easier course, it is better to look at the XPS 15 or HP Specter x360.

The Swift 5 (2019) touchpad is medium in size.supports Microsoft Precision Touchpad driver. The surface is rough, because of which the svaypas will be slower and require tangible efforts. You can get used to it, but when comparing the difference is very noticeable, competitors are more comfortable in this regard. By the way, here we get a touch screen.

Finally, Swift 5 received a fingerprint scanner for entering without a password through Windows Hello. Initially, its setup requires effort, however, then the scanner works quickly and clearly.

    Laptop display

Acer Swift 5 (2019) also equipped15.6-inch Full HD IPS display. The density of pixels at the same time reaches 141ppi, which is enough for a clear image. However, the most demanding users will notice pixelation here.

The screen has a high brightness of 310 nit,Adobe RGB color coverage reaches 72%, and sRGB - 96%. The panel is quite suitable for professional photo and video processing. The color accuracy is 2.23, which is also suitable for professional use. The contrast here is 700: 1 and it is much better than the previous models.

But, as always, there are many "but." Laptop displays evolve very quickly. For example, in XPS, its Full HD panel is much brighter - 397 nits, with a contrast of 1050: 1, and color accuracy is 1.5. It turns out that the characteristics of the screen Swift 5 (2019) meet the minimum criteria for premium class notebooks.

I do not want to say that this is a bad display. It is well suited for working and watching videos (although the content will be dark due to the 2.3 scale). If you do not need an extremely wide color gamut or high color accuracy, then the display of this Acer Swift will like it. However, the fact remains - it is worth quite a bit to pay extra and you can find a laptop with a better display.

    Sound and its quality

The sound of Acer Swift 5 (2019) is of average quality thoughthe volume is high, and the speakers even give out low frequencies. To watch videos on YouTube and media content just right. But, for complete immersion in multimedia content, I advise you to use headphones.

    Iron productivity

For review, I received a model Acer Swift 5 (2019) withquad-core Whiskey Lake Core i5-8265U quad-core processor. The chip allows you to get the best balance of performance and efficiency. If you wish, you can find a model with Core i7, but it has a little worse energy efficiency.

Judging by the test results, Acer has created a laptopwith performance, which is enough for the most typical tasks. For example, in Geekbench 4, the new Swift 5 scored 4416 points in single-core and 13754 in multi-core test. With these results, it competes with the ZenBook 13 UX333 on the Core i5. For office applications, web browsing and the like you have enough with his head.

In the Handbrake test, where the encoding takes place 420MB video in H.265, the situation is similar. As a result - 313 seconds, which is far from the best result. ZenBook 13 managed in 260 seconds, ZenBook 15 - 195 seconds. The result is not top, however, Swift 5 (2019) is also suitable for creative work.

Memory performance is good here, but notthe best. The laptop has an SSD-drive Hynix BC501 256 GB PCIe. It is better in writing speed than in the HP Specter x360, however, it loses in reading speed to all direct competitors, except for the ZenBook 15.

On the positive side, it is worth noting thatThe updated Acer Swift 5 practically does not heat up and you can work on it comfortably even on your lap. Even with a strong overheating load, I did not notice, and the laptop constantly remained absolutely silent.

    Gaming performance

As for graphics performance, AcerSwift 5 (2019) is a completely typical notebook on the Intel UHD 620. According to the tests in 3DMark, its power will be enough only for casual, outdated games with low resolution and graphics settings.

For example, playing the Rocket League is possible, butThis is not the best experience. At 1080p, I got up to 50 fps with medium performance settings, and 27 fps with high quality settings. Quite adequate numbers for a laptop with integrated graphics.

Recently, increasingly 15-inch laptopsget discrete graphics at least entry level. Often, I see that they install GeForce MX150 from Nvidia. But where better to buy something like ZenBook 15, which has an Nvidia GeForce 1050 Max-Q. For gaming and video editing, this is what you need.

    Autonomy Acer Swift 5 (2019)

The easiest way to make a laptop easier is to cut battery capacity. This is exactly what Acer did with the new Swift 5 by installing a 54 Wh battery in here.

Thanks to the energy efficient Whiskey processorLake Core i5 has good autonomy, but not good enough for a laptop with a 15-inch Full HD screen. In the Basemark test, the laptop lasted 3.5 hours. This is significantly worse than the ZenBook 15 (73 Wh) - 6.5 hours and the XPS 15 (97 Wh) - 4.5 hours.

In the test with web browsing, Swift 5 is also notshowed nothing outstanding - 8.5 hours, while the result of the ZenBook 15 is more than 9.5 hours, while the XPS 15 - almost 10.5. With looping playback of Full HD video, the Acer laptop worked for just over 12.5 hours. ZenBook 15 survived for an hour longer, and XPS 15 - for 2 hours.

By battery life, the leaders remainZenBook 15 and XPS 15. In this Swift 5 (2019) is not inferior to other 15-inch competitors. If Acer didn’t want to make a laptop as light as possible, then it was definitely the best in this category.

Yet the results suggest that the new Acer Swift 5 is able to work without recharging almost the entire working day, if you do not run demanding applications.

Acer has set itself a clear task, and coped with it. It was necessary to create a 15-inch lightweight laptop at a price of $ 1,000 (66 thousand rubles) - and it worked. In this case, Acer Swift 5 (2019) was just one step away from the premium class. What is interesting, during the tests I did not find any serious disadvantages here. This is a very balanced laptop in all respects. there are no big compromises.

    Should I buy?

Yes. Swift 5 (2019) is an excellent laptop, with high performance and good display. The desire to make it the easiest in the world has led to no better autonomy and build quality.
