A long-forgotten language returns to the rating of the most popular programming languages

Fortran programming language developed inthe dawn of computer technology in the late 50s of the XX century, is becoming popular again. The ranking of the most significant programming languages as of April 2021 was compiled on the basis of the Tiobe index, based on the number of search queries that mention the name of the programming language.

First place, displacing Java, in April 2021took the C language (Sleep English). The leader of programming languages was created in 1969-1973, and for half a century it has been among the most popular tools for programmers. Java dropped to second place, losing 5.49% from the previous ranking. In third place was Python (developed in 1991) and became the "Language of the Year" in 2007, 2010, 2018 and 2020.

However, the biggest surprise wasthe emergence in 20th place of the rating of Tiobe, the ancient by the standards of the computer age, Fortran programming language, created between 1954 and 1957 at the IBM corporation and became a more practical replacement for machine assembly language. The main goal of the Fortran language (FORmula TRANslator is a translator of formulas) was its use in scientific and engineering calculations. It is the increased need for calculations of this kind that is explained by Tiobe experts, the phenomenon of Fortran's return to the ranking of the most popular programming languages.

Highest Fortran achievement in rankingsThe Tiobe Index was established in 2002 when the language climbed to 10th place. In recent years, Fortran has been in the top ten of programming languages, and has moved up to 20th place from 34th.

An even more impressive rise in popularitydemonstrated the Groovy language (developed in 2003) built on the Java platform with Python, Ruby and Smalltalk capabilities, which burst into 17th place in the ranking from 48th place. Objective-C left the top 20, and Apple's Swift programming language has yet to live up to expectations, as developers prefer more versatile programming tools.
