5 news for Monday: the new Xiaomi 12 Lite

Hi all,

In our telegram channel, the chief once again touched upon the “trolley problem”, mental

an experiment in ethics. The question garnered a lot of comments.

Formally, this experiment has never been carried out, since it is considered unethical to force people to make such a decision, thus moral injury can be caused.

However, YouTube has a YouTube Originals section,in which I want to recommend one of my favorite shows - Mind Field, that is, the "Field of Mind". A very good product in which host Michael Stevens explores the depths of human psychology, testing something on himself (for example, a good 3rd episode of season 2, in which the host tests his interrogation technique when the interrogator is drugged with "truth serum") .

As part of the 1st episode of the 2nd season justinvestigated the "trolley problem". It was decided to set up an immoral but real experiment in which unsuspecting people who came to a focus group on assessing the quality of railways, as if by chance, found themselves in a situation where they see on cameras that a train is going to a group of workers and there is an opportunity to transfer train to the next branch, but then one worker will be killed. And people are trying to call the railway employee responsible for switching the switches, but, of course, he has sunk into the ground, and you have to make a decision on your own.

So you can just see how people behave in such a situation and how they feel after. A small series for half an hour, there are Russian subtitles. By the way, I recommend all three seasons.

Apple's new lock mode

Still, in terms of marketing and the “right” things, Apple is ahead of the rest. The company has long and actively worked to ensure that the iPhone became Volvo in the smartphone market.

Thus, thanks to skillful marketing and activeCrash test demonstrations have made Volvo its image of being the safest car in the world. Once it was, but now the company is owned by the Chinese, and there are safer cars on the market. For example, BMW's third series received higher test scores. But who knows about it? Only those who read thematic resources. The average person knows that Volvos are the safest.

It's the same story with Apple. For many years, the company has been working on the Privacy advertising campaign, the slogan of which is that privacy is about the iPhone.

The new iOS feature should help reinforce that image. This fall, the so-called Lockdown Mode will arrive on iOS, iPadOS and macOS, that is, the lockdown mode.

Apple itself describes Lockdown Mode asoptional extreme protection mode, which can be useful for a very small number of users who are exposed to cyber attacks. In this case, we are talking about journalists, activists, politicians and everyone else whose smartphones become the target of government hackers. By this term, Apple means companies like the NSO Group that have made iPhone hacking their business.

If you forgot, the NSO Group is an Israeli company whose clients are exclusively government organizations.

So, when activating Lockdown Mode:

  • In messages, all attachments and links are disabled, except for pictures.
  • On the Internet, all complex and vulnerable technologies such as just-in-time JavaScript are disabled.
  • Incoming FaceTime calls and other invitations from Apple Services are blocked unless they were initiated by the owner of the smartphone.
  • The smartphone cannot be wired to the computer if the smartphone is locked.
  • Prohibit installation of configuration profiles.

Along the way, Apple announced that it is offering a $2 million reward (more than the industry has yet paid) to anyone who can hack or find a vulnerability in Lockdown Mode.

The situation is certainly interesting.

First, the main conclusion that can be drawn: Apple has recognized that the situation is complex and the iPhone has vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

Secondly, the iPhone in terms of security is alreadywas the new Volvo and Blackberry rolled into one. Now this situation is only getting stronger. The iPhone will be in the hand of every journalist and politician. Even though everyone already has it.

And, thirdly, of course, this is love from ordinary buyers. No one will ever hack them, since no one needs them, but with this mode they will still sleep more peacefully.

Hot stuff - chebupels from Apple

The new MacBook Pro and Air on the M2 chipset have already becomedeficit. But perhaps the most interesting news of the last week is the situation with overheating and severe throttling that occurs with the MacBook Pro under load.

So, one American blogger, comparing the newMacBook on M2 with version on M1, ran a series of tests. The M2 version successfully rendered 4K video for 5 minutes, beating the previous generation of chipsets by 5 seconds. But with 8K video there was an overlay. The MacBook M2 chipset reached 108 degrees and went into failure, reducing power to somehow cool the CPU. As a result, rendering of a 5-minute 8K video took 19 minutes 40 seconds, while the MacBook Pro with the M1 chipset completed the task in 11 minutes 21 seconds.

First, finally, the desire to save money came to Apple sideways. The company advertises the MacBook Pro as a heavy-duty laptop. And here is such a misunderstanding.

Apple is definitely aware of the overheating problem, but, probably decided to launch the product on the market, assuming that no one would use the MacBook Pro M2 for 8K rendering. Still, so far there are not even so many cameras to shoot such content.

Secondly, there are rumors that Apple wants to solveproblem with the transition to a new process technology for the production of chipsets and is rushing TSMC with the production of 3 nm chipsets to replace the current 5 nm. By the way, production should start in the second half of 2022 (which has already begun).

And thirdly, let's just have funsituations where a compact laptop can render 8K video without being plugged into an outlet. Such news make us look forward to when Microsoft and igrodely adapt their products for ARM. And we will enter a new era of lightweight and powerful laptops, not burdened by kilogram power supplies.

To some extent, the wait is not long.According to a recent presentation by Arm Holdings, ARM chipsets for desktops and laptops are expected in 2023. And Nvidia last year told how it creates products on the ARM architecture, demonstrating both ray tracing and DLSS. Let me remind you that then the company launched the game Wolfenstein: Youngblood on a system with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU graphics and a MediaTek Kompanio 1200 chipset.

A new way to deal with the shortage of components

For several years now, the market has been living in a state of deficit. Cryptocurrency mining and the coronavirus pandemic have only made things worse, but it seems that a solution has been found: a recession!

Research firm TrendForce issued a press release that manufacturing companies are facing a wave of cutbacks and even order cancellations.

So far, we are talking about driver chips, microcircuits responsible for power supply (PMIC), CIS (contact image sensors). So, for example, the refusal of drivers is explained by the expectation of a decrease in demand for TVs and computers, which has already begun and will intensify from the second half of 2022.

TrendForce reports that in the second half of 2022, the capacity utilization of factories will be 90-95%.

And the load of factories fulfilling orders according to the 6/7 nm process technology will decrease to 95%. Full loading is expected only for top technologies in the 3-5 nm process technology.

At the same time, the demand forDRAM memory, which is used primarily in servers and laptops. If we compare quarter to quarter, then prices have already decreased by 10% and are likely to decrease further. A similar fate will befall mobile memory in Q3 2022.

The fact that hard times are coming, there will be a global super-recession against the backdrop of inflation, is trumpeted from every iron. The reduction in orders from vendors is another confirmation of this.

Three laws from the State Duma

The State Duma adopted three curious laws. The first allows the transfer of biometric data of Russians (that's us) to the Unified Biometric System (UBS) without the consent of the Russians mentioned above, but with mandatory notification. That is, for example, if you left your personal biometric data in some bank, then the bank will shamelessly transfer them to the EBS, where, according to Alexander Khinshtein, "all information will be safe." The rule will come into effect from March next year.

First, let's start with the fact that somehowlet the rules of orthoepy. Still, in the Russian language, as, indeed, in any other language, the laws of euphony apply. After all, it is unlikely that any of the citizens of Russia will be happy if they receive a notification that they have ended up in the EBS, and their data is now in the hands of a vigilant EBS inspector.

About the law itself. The head of the information policy committee, Alexander Khinshtein, wrote in his telegram channel:

The new norm not only does not violate the rights of Russians,on the contrary, it strengthens their protection. As long as millions of biometric personal data are in the hands of commercial structures (banks, telecom operators, etc.), the state is not able to guarantee their protection from leaks.

The second law is about strengthening the protection of personalRussian data. In addition to such clauses as “operators of personal data processing are obliged to notify the authorities about data leaks within 24 hours”, there is a clause according to which “it is forbidden to refuse to provide services to Russians who have not consented to the processing of their personal data.” The law will come into force on September 1.

In theory, this means that the sameonline stores will have to create product order forms for those who do not want to create a personal account and indicate their mail or phone number. This is good and right. It had to be like this for a long time.

The third law prohibits the transfer of foreigndata abroad. On the one hand, this is correct. On the other hand, it is not clear. For example, it turns out that you can’t analyze data in Google Analytics, and you simply can’t keep a customer table in Google Sheets or Excel Online, as many microbusiness representatives do. Because it would be a violation of the law. Apparently, everyone will download "My Documents" hard.

Xiaomi 12 Lite presented

Xiaomi 11 Lite series are my favorite smartphones2021. With great pleasure I tested all three models. It is a rare case when everything is so well combined in a device of the middle price segment: the screen, the camera capabilities, the performance, the battery life, and the design. So I was looking forward to the official announcement of the 12th series. And here they showed Xiaomi 12 Lite.

  • CPU: Snapdragon 778G 5G

Xiaomi 12 Lite is, like, a direct successorXiaomi 11 Lite 5G N.E. These devices work on the same chipset, but the 12th has a better screen - 120 Hz, probably a little higher brightness, supports more colors. Another plus of the 12th model is the front camera. Now 32 MP vs 20 MP.

Of course, you have to watch live, but for now II do not like. For example, if the devices are almost identical, then why does the new smartphone weigh 173 grams, when the old one fit into 158 grams? The new smartphone will feel like any other in the hand. With a weight of 158 g, Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE seemed light and compact.

I don't like the new set of cameras either. In Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE, all cameras were working - 64 MP + 8 MP (ultra wide-angle lens) + 5 MP (tele and macro). In the new smartphone, the main camera was replaced with a 108 MP module (apparently, this is an increase in weight), and 5 MP was replaced with a 2 MP module, which is responsible for macro photography. And you can’t take a good photo at 2 MP.

Well, let's see, according to the good tradition, Xiaomi shouldrelease several units. Perhaps the presented Xiaomi 12 Lite is the very first entry level. He also has a price of only 25 thousand rubles (when converted from rupees to rubles). In the 11 series, the simple Xiaomi 11 Lite was also boring.

P.S. Have a great week everyone. Already the equator of summer. Hurry up to enjoy this summer as if it were the last, as it were, prosperous!
