Lenovo ThinkPad X13s ARM/Windows laptop

Finally, ARM-laptops began to appear on the marketon Windows from major brands. This is a big event, because so far everything that was in the Windows laptop market can be called rather the pampering of individual brands. For example, Samsung has similar models, but they are not popular.

And ThinkPad is the flagship brand in Lenovo's portfolio, delivering reliability, quality and a great user experience.

For example, the ThinkPad Fold introduced last year, despite all its experimentalism, was a full-fledged universal work machine for every day.

By the way, now the ThinkPad X1 Fold is sold in the US forridiculous 1400 dollars. If it was possible to find at such a price in Russia, I would buy it without hesitation. And I would be happy, like an elephant on a banana plantation. Unfortunately, we even sell a laptop at Avito for 180-200 thousand rubles.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold: very close to the ideal laptop of the future

Flexible OLED screen, compact size, stylus support and a price of 330 thousand rubles.

So buyers will expect a certain (high!) level of user experience from the ThinkPad X13s on an ARM processor.

However, I’ll say right away what to buy ThinkPad X13snow it’s clearly not worth it, since at the start of sales Lenovo indicated a price of $ 2,170. It's too expensive. ARM laptops shouldn't be more expensive than Windows options. Perhaps these devices should even be a little cheaper, since, at the risk of getting under fire, they have a simplified production. Still, there is no longer a processor, but a chipset, that is, a processor, graphics, memory - everything is already soldered.

At the end of October 2021, sales of the new Nintendo Switch OLED console started in Russia. Yes, many have been waiting for the new ...

Although it is absolutely logical that the first ARM-books are more expensive, since the company undoubtedly spent more money on developing and debugging a new type of device.

Another point is that the buyer should not worry about such subtleties. So let's see how Lenovo justifies the high price.

The quality of the official pictures on the Lenovo website, as if they stole them from somewhere.

So, the laptop has a typical appearance forThinkPad-series: modest, but unrestrainedly sexy. One look at the keyboard, its layout with separate arrow keys, enticing fiery trackpoint, causes a frantic desire to work productively on this laptop.

However, don't let appearances fool you. Despite the standard dimensions, the weight of the device is only 1.06 kg.

And the claimed battery life49.5 Wh is 28 hours. This value was obtained when playing Full HD video at a brightness of 150 nits. So, in real life, you can expect no less than 17-18 hours of real work. I would like to say: “How do you like the Intel EVO platform?!”. In standby mode, the laptop will last 11 days.

By the way, an interesting point about the time of autonomouswork. In this laptop, the more RAM, the less time. So the version with 8 GB of RAM will last 28 hours, the version with 16 GB of memory will last 26.2 hours, and the version with 32 GB of memory will last only 22.2 hours.

Used as a chipset in a laptopSnapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute Platform (3.00 GHz, 8 cores / 8 threads) with integrated Adreno 690 graphics, soldered memory up to 32 GB (unfortunately, this is LPDDR4x). 1 TB drive. This is an SSD model that the user can upgrade.

Believe it or not, the ThinkPad X13s has a webcam on5 MP. This is an IR camera with Windows Hello support, and an automatic privacy shutter controlled from the keyboard. There is also a fingerprint scanner. To be honest, I don't even believe it. I expected that in such a miracle machine there should be a classic 720p. For every barrel of honey needs its own fly in the ointment.

Pay attention to what sacrifices had to be made for the sake of the 5 MP camera.

However, as a fly in the ointment can actscreen. Three WUXGA (resolution 1920 x 1200 dots) options are available - normal and touch. All panels are IPS LCD, with 100% sRGB color gamut (forgivable), two panels at 300 nits and one at 400 nits. If the anti-reflective coating does not let us down, then it will be possible to work comfortably on the street.

The laptop has only 2 USB Type-C ports to which you can connect monitors. There is a headphone jack. Adapter 65W.

Of course, the device supports Wi-Fi 6E, but there is also a 5G modem that works in the millimeter range. By the way, there are two options for a laptop - with a physical SIM card and with eSIM.

An interesting point is that the laptop is sold in the USAor on the Lenovo official website, or in the Verizon operator network. There, the device can be bought with a contract for 36 months for $45 a month. The user is entitled to unlimited Internet (60 GB per month, then the speed will be cut to 600 kb / s or up to 3 Mb / s in the 5G zone). Perhaps for this reason, Lenovo raised the price: the task is to make sure that they buy a laptop mainly in operator retail.

The laptop runs on Windows 11 Pro.

The story with ARM-books is gaining momentum. So far, unfortunately, nothing is clear about the real performance of the ThinkPad X13s. On YouTube, there are only cautious “first looks” and unboxings: like, this is the device, this is the box. Here you just want to assume that something is wrong, but no one wants to quarrel with Lenovo. However, perhaps just a new device, and so far no one has managed to make a quality review. Let's wait!

ASUS Zenfone 9

ASUS held a presentation of the Zenfone 9 smartphone. This smartphone was not included in the selection of new smartphones of the month, as it will officially go on sale only in August. By the way, a selection of the main smartphones in July can be read here:

New in July: 9 major smartphones and 1 phone

July turned out to be a surprisingly hot month. There are many interesting smartphones on sale.

ASUS Zenfone 9 is a rather curious device, however, it has not been without its drawbacks. Let's take a closer look at the device.

  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (4nm), Adreno 730 graphics
  • operating system: Android 12, ZenUI skin

  • materials: glass front, resin back, aluminum frame
  • Dimensions: 146.5 x 68.1 x 9.1 mm, weight 169 grams
  • Price: from 800 euros

I must say right away that I have from ASUS smartphonesthere were only positive impressions. And the Zenfone 5 model (2018), after the device was reviewed by me, I recommended it to all my friends and acquaintances. A couple of acquaintances still use a smartphone and are still satisfied.

With this, I understand to buy a smartphone from ASUS,you have to have some courage. Still, the brand is better known for laptops and computers, in the smartphone market everyone is more familiar with Samsung or Xiaomi. At the same time, ASUS never dumps, but asks the full price for its smartphones. This point needs to be understood, since for some reason many people believe that if a brand is not particularly represented in a certain category, then it should attract customers at a low price.

ASUS Zenfone 9 is interesting in several ways.

First, it's the dimensions. How many years among consumers there is a howl about how tired these "shovels" are. And from time to time, manufacturers are led to this, releasing compact models. Well, then the iPhone Mini or Samsung Galaxy S10e disappear from sales, as they turn out to be useless.

ASUS Zenfone 9 is compact but plumpsmartphone. Dimensions: 146.5 x 68.1 x 9.1 mm. Screen size 5.9 inches. ASUS could cut off a couple more millimeters if it used a curved screen, but here the standard AMOLED, so the smartphone has a small “chin” at the bottom.

At the same time, the smartphone is sharpened to be controlled withhim with one hand. So the power button, combined with a fingerprint scanner, also supports gestures. With swipes, you can expand the curtain, refresh or scroll through a web page, double tap starts the speech recognition mode.

The second interesting point is the materials and design. On the one hand, Samsung with its “glastic” has taught us everything. On the other hand, it is still somehow unexpected to see a plastic back in a smartphone for 800 euros. But in general, what's the difference? The main thing is to be safe and comfortable. And here, it seems to be safe. For example, a smartphone has IP68 water protection. Plus, they promise that the back does not catch fingerprints.

Operator news: new Tele2 tariff

It seems that the new tariff from Tele2 looks like a great reason to throw a gamepad into your backpack so that you always have it at hand.

Buyer's guide. Compare iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22. Which flagship is better?

Two flagships, two worlds so different. How much the Apple Pro model is more expensive and how much weaker than the Galaxy S22, and most importantly, in what. We understand.

7 main smartphones of June

3 hits from Honor, a fun smartphone from Sony, an incomprehensible smartphone from OnePlus and a foldable device from Huawei.

What are Huawei Mesh Class 3 Wi‑Fi 6 Wireless Routers?

Install a similar system at home or in the country - and let the whole world wait ...

However, the fingerprint scanner is not under the screen, but in the power button - this is ... mmm ... an interesting solution for this price.

But there is a 3.5 mm jack. Thus, it turns out that ASUS Zenfone 9, along with Sony Xperia 1 IV, are the only devices on the market with a flagship chipset that can be connected to wired headphones without an adapter.

Well, the overall design is nice. Looks fresh and nice.

The third point is good iron. For example, a very bright screen is “luminous” at 850 nits, the battery does not strike at charging speed, but you can count on 9 hours of screen operation in everyday tasks.

A positive point that ASUS seems to have managedcurb Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. So, in the maximum performance mode in the hourly CPU Throttling test, the smartphone “dipped” to 80%. And that's great value.

And finally, we can praise the cameras. The suggested daytime test photos are very good. And more work should be done on night algorithms.

If you still find fault, you can complain about the lack of wireless forward / reverse charging.

Well, now it remains to wait. Will the eternal whiners run to buy a compact smartphone, or, as usual, come up with some kind of excuse to buy "burst", and then complain to the whole world. I really liked the smartphone. It is curious whether it will appear in Russia and at what price.

Samsung + Qualcomm

Good news for Samsung owners around the world. After the “creative failure” of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which was too hot and lags in games, there were already rumors that Samsung plans to change the approach to its chipsets, take a timeout to understand the situation and find the best solution.

We have already dealt with possible rumors that Samsungmay refuse its own flagship chipsets until 2025 in order to “rebuild” them from scratch, making them not only high-performance, but also cold.

These rumors have been confirmed.Samsung and Qualcomm issued a joint press release declaring their love, friendship and long-term strategic partnership. So the companies agreed to "extend the patent license agreement for 7 years until 2030" and that Snapdragon chipsets will be used in future Samsung Galaxy devices.

So, among other things, it is said that cooperation will take place in the field of modems for 3G, 4G, 5G and future 6G communications.

And it is also explicitly written that Samsung agreedto expand cooperation in the field of using Snapdragon chipsets in premium Samsung Galaxy products, which, in addition to smartphones, also include tablets with computers, as well as gadgets for augmented reality.

Speculation immediately appeared on the network thatExynos chipsets are dead. This, of course, is a vile lie and vile insinuations. There are not many companies in the world that have the competence to develop their own chipsets. And these are unique skills that are easy to lose but hard to acquire.

Similar speculation has been with the Galaxy Note series. And then I wrote exactly the same idea that the stylus is a unique product, so Samsung will not throw it in the trash. And so it happened. The Galaxy Note series is dead, but the stylus has been moved to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Second point:Samsung has always used its own chipsets to gain leverage with Qualcomm. It's no secret that Samsung is one of Qualcomm's top customers, as well as one of the top players in the chipset and smartphone market. The company buys chipsets from Qualcomm, and sells its own chipsets (both in its smartphones and on the side), as well as Samsung factories produce various chipsets.

For example, one can only guess how joyfullydanced in the Qualcomm office when they agreed that the Galaxy A52 series - the most popular smartphones of 2021 - will be released on Snapdragon chipsets, and not on Exynos, like previous models. Clearly, Samsung also got a bargain price.

So the fact that Samsung deliberately takes a break, temporarily switching to chipsets from Qualcomm, is a direct demonstration of how the company cares about its customers, trying to give them the best.

It's been two months since summer. If you have not had time to enjoy the summer to the fullest, then you have a whole month to catch up. In August, we are waiting for a lot of interesting premieres, both from Samsung and from other brands.
