#187. And yet they were right: on the disk, or rather

Hello!

In this issue, I would like to touch upon the world of secrets, oddities and mysteries that surrounds us.

First

strangeness is the main page of Yandex, which now transfers to dzen.ru. Of course, we all read the news about the deal that Yandex gets Delivery Club, and VK gets the Yandex.Zen and Yandex.News platforms. But it's one thing to read, it's another to see live how a large Internet company sells its home page.

On the other hand, the deal is super profitable for Yandex. The Yandex search bar on the Zen page has remained, and even Yandex Browser is still recommended.

By the way, what is happening will also come back to haunt us,but not in a positive way. "Yandex" is well known for the fact that it likes to inflate prices as much as possible. Theater tickets with 10% cashback points just mean the price will be 10% higher. There are several Volkswagen Polos from Yandex.Drive under the window, which are more expensive than BMWs in Delimobile.

And, as I understand it, after the acquisition of Delivery Club, Yandex controls more than 70% of the delivery market. And it's ridiculous to think that a company won't use its monopoly to drive up prices.

About autopilot

Perhaps the hottest topic in the automotive industry isautopilot. For example, Xiaomi last month, talking about its achievements (if you forgot, the company wants to roll out its first car already in 2024), spoke specifically about the autopilot.

The video showed how cleverly Xiaomi Pilot Technology copes even with rather difficult intersections.

I remembered about Xiaomi and the autopilot, as a video with a certain Canadian driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his Tesla is viral on the Internet.

The video was made by a motorist driving in the next lane. Claims that Tesla was traveling at a speed of approximately 110 km per hour.

Obviously, the Canadian's behavior is criminal irresponsibility.

According to the classification, there are 6 levelsindependence of the autopilot, where 0 is an ordinary Lada Vesta car, and 5 is a car that may not have a steering wheel (for example, an ultra-simplified UAZ Patriot). Tesla has something between 2 and 3. However, Elon Musk claims that by the end of 2022 they can reach the 4th level.

By the way, the description of the classification says thatstarting at level 4, the driver can sleep at the wheel. At level 4, it is assumed that the driver takes over control only in special circumstances.

Either way, this is what it looks like.the future when the car moves along the highway or the city, and the owner sleeps or goes about his business. Looking forward to this time. In large cities, the option will be in great demand. In fact, you will have a personal office on wheels, in which you can safely work on the go.

And yet they were right: on the disk, or rather

Perhaps it is time to repent and apologize. For the last eight years I have been laughing at the "pirates" who download music from torrents in the old fashioned way. He scoffed in the comments at statements that music “on disk” is more true than all these streamings that are here today and not tomorrow. And hello!

Sony Music Group makes an exodus from Russia, picking up their catalogues. Sony Music is the second largest content major in the world, sitting between Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. For understanding, the above three majors control almost 80-90% of all world music. Clearly, Sony's exit will encourage Universal and Warner to move on as well. Otherwise, the data of the company will look somehow strange and politically incorrect.

In the Yandex Music application, some songs have become unavailable. They still appear in the catalog, but are not active.

Sony Music, as it happens in such cases, handed over control to Russian top managers and left domestic music. That is, Pink Floyd will be taken away, but the rap artist GONE.Fludd, who honed his flow in the urban-type settlement of Tuchkovo near Moscow, with the heartfelt composition "BANDIT'S TEAR" will be left.

Firstly, the Russian management had to bargain more actively (for example, try to exchange a "bandit" for the Wu-Tang Clan or Bob Dylan with Aerosmith).

Secondly, is it necessary to agree to such a unilateral termination? After all, the conditional listener of Taylor Swift is unlikely to agree to a replacement in the form of Sergey Lazarev (although the essence is similar).

Perhaps it's time to stop pretending that everything is fine and will soon return to their places, and it's time to build their own state-approved pirate services with movies, videos, music and games?

Ways of development of the West and East

A few words about the West

It is well known that the quality of the Internet in the United States leaves much to be desired, and this despite the fact that the country is full of innovative corporations.

You can read quite a few explanations for this. Some sound ridiculous. For example, Select Communications (these are consultants that help businesses solve all network issues) writes that since the United States is a young nation, at the telephony stage, cables of various quality were actively laid at great depths and now it is difficult to reach them. But in Europe, where the nations are old and everything has already been built, they could not do this, so only good cables were laid right away. Amazing version.

There is also a theory that the main network providersIn 1997, the United States entered into a non-competition pact, the meaning of which is that each provider keeps its own territory, where no one pokes fun. Accordingly, in the absence of competition, the need to actively develop also disappeared. Sounds more believable. I think those with only one ISP in their home can attest that a monopoly is evil.

I have my own hypothesis. In my opinion, Americans just realized too late that fast Internet is a powerful stimulant for economic development. If you think about it, in the US, not only wired, but also mobile Internet has always been slow. The 2G and 3G era has been slammed in the US. We analyzed this moment back in the spring here:

#Echo163. Russia really needs 5G, and as soon as possible

When UnionPay is in Russia, without 5G, Russia will have a bleak future.

With 4G, they also harnessed for a long time, since the transition from 3Gon 4G means that you need to build a new network, and what capitalist company will start building a new network when the old one has not yet been milked dry, right?

And only recently the situation began to change. The United States is actively building a 5G network, and the government has allocated $45 billion to provide high-speed Internet to the entire country by 2030.

What is happening is very interesting to watch. For example, Comcast, a broadband provider, has begun deploying a wired network that will provide 50 million households with Internet at 2 Gbps. People will install Wi-Fi 6E routers. The modernization process is planned to be completed by 2025.

So it is likely that in the US the situation with the quality and speed of the network will change dramatically.

A few words about the East

In the last year, we often touch on the topic of developmentdomestic electronics. When looking at it, it seems to me that Russia can become an advanced power in terms of the development of quantum computing, since everything that is said and done with the domestic electronics industry is perfectly intertwined with quantum mechanics. See for yourself.

So, Richard Feynman (holding the medalNobel Prize in Physics) once said: “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, then you don’t understand quantum mechanics.” These words are very suitable for domestic microelectronics.

Or is quantum computers based on the factthat in the microcosm everything is not as clear and obvious as we are used to in our everyday macrocosm. Photons and electrons can do things that a normal person does not fit into his head. For example, Petya's electron can be in two places at the same time (both his wife and his mistress), and Edik's photon can have two types of polarity at once. When a person tries to measure an electron, he sees only one of its states, and all other options seem to be absent. But it's not. Simply put, it is impossible to see this, but, quoting DMB, there is a gopher.

This fits in perfectly with the current state.affairs. There is a feeling that the domestic electronics industry is in a state of superposition, that is, it both already exists and does not exist at the same time. It seems that everything has already been developed and is ready for mass production, but it seems that it is not ready at all, but only plans are being written.

For example, in this article we askedthe question is, where are the domestic base stations, which, according to press releases, were supposed to enter the mass production stage at the end of the year. However, for some reason, in the latest news, we are told that it will take another three years to develop even a 4G station.

#184. Where did domestic 4G and 5G stations go?

In Russia there are domestic 4G and 5G, but they are hidden! Cameras under the screen and the inconspicuous development of technology.

Or, back in July of this year, they tried to trace the path of development of electronics.

They recalled that in 2014 at the profileSemiconductor forum SEMICON Russia talked about a breakthrough and a three-step program. At the first stage - to create conditions, at the second (until 2020) - to launch new projects, and at the third - to actively increase the pace. In theory, we should have been in the third stage by now.

Xiaomi 12 Lite review: the best choice!

A beautiful, comfortable, modern smartphone with excellent cameras, decent battery life and a 120 Hz AMOLED screen for adequate money ...

But apparently something went wrong. And according to the project of August 2019, presented by Vasily Shpak, director of the radio-electronic industry department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, by 2030 it was planned to increase the share of the Russian component base to 80%. However, I remember the news very well, as in April of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia sent Mishustin a new project, according to which by 2030 it is necessary to produce chips using the 28 nm process technology.

However, in July of this year, V. Putin (President of the Russian Federation) said that the project for the development of the microelectronics industry had to be restarted. I will quote the words of the president on Interfax:

I know that colleagues there will now say:there is not enough funding, something else, but I’m just stating the very fact of what is happening, including projects for creating fifth-generation networks, developing the production of equipment for the widespread introduction of the Internet of things, and the project for the development of the microelectronic industry had to be completely restarted in Last year.

And now another note comes out in Kommersant, that "The Ministry of Industry and Trade has prepared an updated concept of state policy for the development of Russian microelectronics until 2030." It is reported that the project should be publicly presented in October at the Microelectronics-2022 forum. Unfortunately, the forum is planned to be held in Rosa Khutor, so it is unlikely that it will be possible to visit. By the way, the forum in general for some reason chooses non-banal venues. For example, last year it was held in Alushta. Although, it would seem, where is Alushta (in fact, next to Alupka), and where is microelectronics. It should be held in Zelenograd or Nizhny Novgorod.

I will quote Kommersant:

The document quite self-critically listsacute problems of Russian microelectronics ... The Ministry suggests that market participants coordinate “research in the field of advanced technologies”, increase capacities “including through mastering the production of microelectronics with modern topological standards”, create (virtually from scratch) an electronic engineering industry and, finally, abandon foreign architectures in the design of electronics.

As in all previous materials, I will say thatit is not at all clear what is going on. For example, now this is a restart, named by V. Putin (President of the Russian Federation)? Although, judging by the fact that the president said that “the microelectronics industry development project had to be completely restarted last year,” is this already a restart of a restart?

Once again, I note that there is not enough transparency and some kind of narrator (for example, as the voiceover of Morgan Freeman), who would regularly tell what is actually happening.

Speed Obsession - Wi-Fi 7

By the way, since we started talking about the development of speedsthe Internet. Meanwhile, Intel and Broadcom conducted the first tests of Wi-Fi 7 using the appropriate modem installed in a laptop. It turned out to achieve a speed of 5 Gb / s.

The main difference between the new version and Wi-Fi 6 isadditional channel. Wi-Fi 6 added a 160 MHz channel, and Wi-Fi 7 introduced a 320 MHz channel, plus, in addition to 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequencies, a 6 GHz frequency appeared (as in Wi-Fi 6E).

Intel says Wi-Fi 7 will enable 16K video transmission, and most importantly, will make augmented and virtual reality ubiquitous.

Interestingly, Wi-Fi 7 is not yet fullycertified and not standardized (standardization is expected to be completed by the end of 2023), which, however, does not prevent some particularly zealous companies from already launching the first routers that support Wi-FI 7.

So, in July this year, the Chinese H3C introducedH3C Magic BE18000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router. This is a tri-band router (2.4, 5.0 and 6.0 GHz) supporting a 320 MHz channel. The router uses the platform and the new chipset from Qualcomm. Here, perhaps, it should be added that MediaTek is also not far behind. Back in the first half of the year, the company introduced its Wi-Fi 7 platform - MediaTek Filogic 880 (but without specific products).

This is probably a test sample, as I would not want routers to become so plump.

At this rate, before the official certification, the Chinese will also start producing laptops that support Wi-Fi 7.

Main question:why do you need to run ahead of the locomotive? For example, if a person buys this Wi-Fi 7 router for himself, what will he connect to it? In this regard, of course, the position of Apple is closer to me, which usually introduces new technologies only when they are already ready for the mass consumer.

In general, somehow the speed of technology introduction,I think it has grown. Wi-Fi 6 is still a rarity, I’m completely silent about Wi-Fi 6E, and in 2024 flagships with Wi-Fi 7 support will already begin to be released with might and main.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to touch on another mystery of no lesser scale than the sale of the home page by Yandex and the quantum uncertainty of Russian microelectronics.

No one can feel safeApple said that in iOS 16, iPhones numbered XR, 11, 12 mini and 13 mini will not be able to display the battery percentage in the status bar. But the iPhone XR and 11 are one of the most popular devices in the world.

And, of course, I want to ask whyhappening. How can there be such restrictions on expensive smartphones? This is another one of the mysteries that historians of technology and management of the future have yet to solve.
