What is dyslexia and how can it be cured?

There are many diseases in the world thatassociated with disorders of the brain and spinal cord, as well as various groups of nerves. These diseases are called neurological disorders and dyslexia is considered one of the most common of them. The exact cause of this disease is still unknown, but in what it manifests itself, everyone is already well aware. People with dyslexia have a hard time mastering the skills associated with writing and reading. Due to difficulties in reading and writing, dyslexics often fall behind in learning, which negatively affects the quality of their adult life. Since the exact cause of dyslexia is unknown, there is no effective treatment for the disease. But recently, researchers in Switzerland have come a step closer to creating such a technology - they made it easier for patients to read by exposing their brains to small electrical discharges.

Dyslexia affects about 10% of the world's population

What is dyslexia?

According to the calculations of the researchers, todayabout 10% of the world's population suffers from dyslexia. This disease is quite difficult to diagnose, especially in school-age children. Most often, suspicions arise when reading and writing is much more difficult for a child than for classmates. Due to problems with these skills, children with dyslexia have great problems with other school subjects. Ultimately, this sometimes translates into serious difficulties in adulthood. However, it is important to understand that dyslexia manifests itself in different ways. Patients usually have one or more of these problems:

  • difficulty reading;
  • difficulties with writing;
  • literacy problems;
  • problems with math;
  • violation of coordination of movements;
  • inability to concentrate.

There is even a website on the Internet where you canexperience how dyslexic people see letters. Perceptual impairment is not accurately conveyed, but the general idea of the problem can be added up.

Healthy and dyslexic brains work differently

Dyslexia treatment

A speech therapist treats dyslexia. Due to the widespread prevalence of the disease, in some schools in large cities the speech therapist is a full-time employee. Treatment for dyslexia mainly comes down to doing exercises from the book "Gift of Dyslexia" by Ronald Davis. They are aimed at teaching dyslexics to get rid of distortions that arise in reading and writing with the help of imagination. It sounds like something difficult and impossible, but there really is a result from this method of treatment, because it was developed by a person who himself suffered from dyslexia. It is known that Ronald Davis was born with autism and remained illiterate until the age of 38. The developed methods helped him to eliminate all the problems.

As mentioned above, the exact reason for the developmentdyslexia has not yet been identified. But there are several assumptions that are readily believed. One of the versions says that a neurological disorder occurs due to a phonological deficit. Under this term, it is customary to understand the phenomenon in which the human brain has difficulty correlating the sound of letters with their writing. But it is important to understand that this mechanism can explain only one of the manifestations of dyslexia, and there are many of them. So, in each specific case, the reason should be different.

Dyslexic brain function

But there is also a more general explanation for the developmentdyslexia. In the course of several scientific works, scientists have found out that dyslexics have problems with the work of the so-called left auditory cortex. It is responsible for processing sound and operates at a frequency of 30 Hz, but frequencies differ for dyslexic sufferers. Based on the fact that the activity of the brain can be influenced by exposure to a magnetic field, researchers from Switzerland suggested that with normalization of brain frequencies, dyslexia in patients should disappear. To test their theory, scientists conducted an experiment.

It looks like the process of brain stimulation

On the heads of 30 people were found "hats" withelectrodes generating a magnetic field. Half of the volunteers suffered from dyslexia, while the other half had no problems with writing and reading. To the surprise of the authors of the study, when a magnetic field stimulated the left auditory cortex to work at a frequency of 30 Hz, dyslexics really began to read well. But for people who already read well, stimulation, on the contrary, interfered.

This is very superficial at this point.experiment and scientists should conduct an experiment involving more people of different sex and age. It is necessary to find out how long the obtained effect lasts and whether such therapy has negative consequences. The results of this scientific work were published in the journal PLOS Biology.

In general, electrical stimulation of various organsquite capable of endowing people with superhuman abilities. In 2019, I talked about how by acting on a person's muscles with electricity, you can increase his reaction and accuracy several times. You can read more about this technology in this article.
