Experience with vivo X Fold+

The first version of the X Fold was shown at the beginning of last year. Later, X Fold + appeared with slightly more advanced

  • A red device was put on sale;
  • Updated processor from Snap 8 Gen 1 to Snap 8+ Gen 1;
  • We added a little capacity to the battery: it was 4600 mAh, and it became 4730 mAh;
  • The charging power has increased - from 66 W to 80 W.

That is, the already quite powerful device has become even better.

Frankly, to smartphones with flexibleI was neutral about screens: yes, there is a second large screen, but the device itself is too big and awkward. After I used the vivo X Fold for a long time, my impression of this kind of gadgets has changed a lot for the better.

It seems to me that with "clamshells" such as Foldit takes time to adapt, get used to new forms of communication with the phone. The analogy is not entirely correct, but it reminds of the stages of accepting the inevitable: at first - a complete rejection of the flexible screen, but later - its acceptance. Only the last stage is already perceived positively.

Moreover, I even understood the meaning of a large external screen. I used to advocate reducing it in order to use the internal display more often.

At the moment, even the most advanced classic smartphones seem like primitive devices from the last century.

All my favorite features came together in vivo X Fold:

  • Both displays are flat, without any "waterfalls";
  • The design itself is flat;
  • The back surface is covered with eco-leather - no prints;
  • A complete set of necessary lenses: here you have a “wide”, and a regular camera, and a 2X zoom, and even a 5X zoom;
  • Smooth shell;
  • Very loud stereo speakers;
  • Sound blocking slider on the edge of the case;
  • Two fingerprint scanners - unrealistically fast;
  • Instant face recognition;
  • Great uptime.

Mayakovsky's autobiography contains the following quote:

"First book. Some kind of “Agafya the bird house”. If I had come across several such books at that time, I would have stopped reading altogether. Fortunately, the second one is Don Quixote. This is the book!"

This is how it is with my vivo X Fold: if I didn’t come across this device, I would quit using such devices.

On AliExpress and Avito, vivo X Fold + can be found on average for 110,000 rubles. Harsh? In general, yes. But the device is not easy.

Design, usability

Smartphone vivo X Fold + did not claim the titlethe thinnest and lightest gadget among the "fold-like" gadgets. Therefore, it is worth considering the following point: the device has dimensions when folded of about 162x74x14 mm, and when unfolded - 145x162x7 mm.

For example, Huawei Mate X3: 156.9 x 141.5 x 5.3 mm - open, 156.9 x 72.4 x 11.8 mm - closed.

As for the weight of the vivo X Fold +, it is about 311 grams. Pretty hefty stick. The same Huawei weighs 240 grams.

Nevertheless, when you have a “brick” weighing more than 230 grams in your pocket, it already becomes all the same: what is 300 grams, what is 350. One way or another, you will have to carry a heavy gadget.

I quickly got used to the weight and dimensions of the X Fold +.A couple of days later I had no problems. Moreover, it seemed to me that using a plump smartphone is even more convenient than using a thin one: it is better to grip it with your hand, the gadget does not slip out. Another feature - you feel the value in every sense of the word: expensive, big, powerful. In part, it can be compared with the first impressions from Apple 10 years ago: welcome to the elite club of owners of expensive and unusual equipment!

vivo design is flat, no waterfall screensor unrealistic rounding of the hull. Eco-leather was “stretched” on the back panel. Always welcomed such decisions. The material is soft, does not slip, does not leave fingerprints, does not heat up during prolonged use of the smartphone. And as time has shown, it almost never wears out.

The camera module was not lost during the month of active work with the device. Paint in place. The module itself is small and does not protrude too much above the body.

The build quality is at a high level.In my case, there were no issues. But the test sample had already been beaten by someone notably before me: there are decent dents in the metal in the corners. And "mutilations" on all corners. The impression is that the previous blogger deliberately “killed” the device on the asphalt.

Claims are only to the slider-switchringer/vibrate modes. It is almost recessed into the body, it is extremely inconvenient to cling with a finger to move it. But the feature itself is cool: you don’t have to get into the settings to change modes, as in Apple products and some OnePlus gadgets.

The oleophobic coating of the external screen is not bad, the finger glides easily, the prints are eliminated quickly.

Fingerprint scanner under the screen - unrealisticfast (most likely, it is ultrasonic). I have not seen such sensors yet. The impression that the screen turns off the lock before you touch the display. The same scanner is in the internal display.

Facial recognition is another nice thing.The smartphone unlocks very quickly, accurately and from almost any viewing angle. After vivo X Fold + began to use Huawei P60 Pro. The difference, alas, is not in favor of the latter: the face is recognized for a long time, and the backlight of the scanner blinds the eyes.

Flexible screen

As I wrote earlier, I was skeptical or neutral about flexible screens in smartphones. The thing was that I didn’t use such gadgets for long, I didn’t get used to it.

I have had the vivo X Fold + gadget for about a month, so I sorted out the nuances of “flexibility” by bones.

The device does not have lye, it is closed tightly, it will not work to insert a sheet of paper. The X Fold+ doesn't have a loop at the fold.

The halves have small indentations in placejoints, so opening the device is quite convenient. Another question is that the mechanism is equipped with magnets that tightly hold the two halves in a closed state. To open - you need to apply force. I can not say that it is difficult to do, but there may be certain nuances.

The closer is only when the device is folded. When unfolding, you will have to unbend the device to the end.

When unfolded, the inner screen is almostsmooth. Here I mean that the opening angle is not 180 degrees, but a little less: maybe in the region of 177-178 degrees. But this does not affect the user experience in any way.

Fold?It is available on almost all devices with a flexible screen. And again, it has no effect on work experience. Of course, if you specifically look at the display at an angle, feel the notch, it becomes clear exactly where the hollow goes. But in 99% of cases, after a couple of days of operation, you do not notice this moment.

A thin rubberized strip runs along the perimeter of the screen. When folded, it is she who tightly closes the two parts of the display.

There is a film on the display. She has very good anti-reflective properties, she almost does not transmit light.

Therefore, it is comfortable to use the device in the unfolded state even in bright sunny weather.

Fingerprints are visible and easy to wipe off. But somehow I didn't give a damn about it.

The fingerprint scanner is on the right side. Just as fast and accurate as on an external screen.

External display - 6.5 inches.Pretty big and stretchy. Some time ago, I did not understand why use a large screen in clamshells. After a long time of operation, I realized that the external display should be exactly like this, because when the device is folded, you do not experience discomfort: the impression that you have an ordinary smartphone in your hands, only a thick one.

But the internal screen opens if you need to read information, see a map or photos from a video.

After a couple of weeks of using the external screen, I got used to the scheme: I looked at the information on the external screen, and then opened the internal one - and already did my job there.

Now all classic smartphones seem like devices from the past - screens are too small.

But there are also disadvantages.However, they are associated with the adaptation of applications to Fold-like gadgets. For example, on the vivo X Fold+, the Telegram program looks silly: the information is formatted on the left. I tried to change the DPI from 300 to 400, but in this case, contacts are displayed on the left, and text on the right. And I expected the text to fill the screen. Why do I need contacts on the left side? ..

With the rest of the applications, it's about the same: somewhere the interface is simply stretched, somewhere it is not formatted that way.

In general, Android needs a special mode that allows you to format the UI for flexible screens. But here the question is no longer for Google, but for programmers who create programs for the Android OS.

The brightness of the external screen is about 850 nits, internal - about 800 nits. Information is readable in any lighting conditions.

As for the PWM, the ripple coefficient of the outer screen does not exceed 20%, and the KP of the inner screen - up to 40%. And this is provided that the flicker suppression function is enabled in the developer settings.

Total: the two halves of the case close tightly, there are no loops, the brightness of the displays is high, almost everything was liked.

What laptops will look like in 2023

A lot of laptops were shown at CES.Some will go on sale soon, others will have to wait until May. However, already now it is possible to take a look at the clearing as a whole and understand what awaits us. And also to designate the most interesting models.

Quite an important point in such devices.If everything has been clear with classic smartphones for a long time - 5-6 hours of screen glow, as a rule, gives out an average gadget - then how does a device with two screens behave, where the inner one is almost twice as large as the outer one?

In the case of vivo X Fold +, I was pleased with the operating time: the gadget easily gives out the same 5-6 hours of screen glow at automatic brightness, with a SIM card, with all applications.

The X Fold + device survived from early morning until late evening, and there was still 10% -15% of the battery charge.

Toys put the battery in 7 hours, video - in 13 hours.

Also, don't forget that the kit includes80W power adapter. In 10 minutes, it gives about 30% -40% of the charge. Up to 100% is charged in 45-50 minutes. The smartphone has 50W wireless charging as well as 10W reverse charging.

And then a pleasant surprise awaited me again - a completea set of cameras for all occasions: wide, main powerful camera, 2x zoom and 5x zoom. I will not dwell on modules, sensors, megapixels and apertures in detail. In this case, it doesn't matter.

All cameras provide excellent image quality.For a month of operation, I had no questions about the camera of this device. Again, this is not a photo flagship, but a Fold-type gadget. However, it is equipped with a rather impressive optical system.

The disadvantages would include shooting video in 4K 60 fps.For some reason, optical stabilization does not work there. I had to record a mini-concert with my daughter in it at the House of Culture - and it turned out that all the videos were in a “tremor”.

But in the "Horizontal stabilization" mode, the smartphone can be turned at least 90 degrees - the picture will be smooth. This impressed me greatly. However, there will be only 1080p at 30 fps.

Another of the minuses is the low resolution of videos from the selfie camera. Again 1920×1080 at 30 fps.

In the interface on the inner screen, there is a mode,when photos and settings are displayed below, and the image from the cameras is displayed on top. Didn't use, didn't use. But the chip is handy, especially if you are taking group shots or shooting a starry sky.

Hardware and system

The vivo X Fold + smartphone is equipped with a pretty decent SoC - Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM lives inside, and the built-in memory can be 256/512 GB of UFS 3.1 type.

In the Antutu test, the device is gaining more than 1,200,000points when set in the Accumulator "Reinforced" and about 800,000 points when set to "Balanced". This performance will be enough for another 5 years, until the developers come up with some kind of buggy toy that will uselessly take up device resources. Like Genshin Impact: somehow it goes even on the most advanced smartphones. And not because there is not enough performance, but because it is necessary to adequately optimize the software and hardware. How do all the toys on the outdated Apple iPhone 11 behave there? Yes, great!

With active use, the vivo X Fold + smartphone almost does not heat up. You can notice a warm body only after charging the battery.

Were the brakes of the system noticed? No.But from time to time I caught glitches of the internal screen: you unfold it, but it does not show the desktop - there is a background image on the screen. This behavior happens every few days. It seems to me that this is not so critical.

My sample did not have Google services. But this is not a problem, since you can install Google Play on the device, register your account in it and not know grief.

However, there may be nuances:WhatsApp calls come to the “background” (you need to unlock the screen, launch the application and already answer the call in it), “Avito” and “Yandex Mail” sometimes do not send notifications, the Eufy Security program did not work in the background. Everything else is no problem.

The system is beautiful, smooth, everything is easy to adjust for yourself. Definitely better than Funtouch OS on other vivo phones.

Vivo X Fold + has two speakers - on topand below on one half. They are loud, with pleasant bass notes. It seems to me that they are better than on the Huawei P60 Pro. At least in terms of surround sound. Talking on the speakerphone is a pleasure: the sound is clear, the timbre is natural. In general, I was satisfied.

By the way, I caught myself thinking that I received almost all the calls to the device in the open form on the speakerphone.

The gadget supports all possible modern Bluetooth audio codecs. I connected Sony and Huawei headphones to vivo and tested a bunch of FIIO BTR7 + FH3 headphones on a smartphone. Everything is fine, no complaints.

Review of FIIO BTR7 and FH3 headphones

Compact portable amplifier-DAC with USB-C and Bluetooth connectivity…

In short, I was very impressed with vivo X Fold +. Apparently, all the "stars" converged in this gadget:

  • Flat design;
  • Pleasant back surface;
  • Cool cameras;
  • High speed of work;
  • Convenient opening of two halves of the case;
  • Speakers.

Well, and so on.

The disadvantages of this gadget are enough:

  • Big and heavy;
  • Without Google services (yes, you can "roll" Play);
  • The front camera shoots FullHD;
  • The main camera at 4K 60 fps writes videos without a “stub”;
  • PWM ripple up to 40% at the inner screen.

If the vivo X Fold+ had stayed for a while longer after the test, I would have continued to use it. So I can advise.

Vivo recently introduced the X Fold 2 version.It became thinner, lighter, the processor was changed to a more powerful SoC, 120 W charging appeared, the battery capacity slightly increased, and the like. The second version can be found on Avito for 120,000 - 140,000 rubles. CDEK sells the device from 112,000 rubles, and on OZON the gadget is presented for 120,000 - 130,000 rubles.

If I manage to get X Fold 2, I will definitely tell you in the next article.
