Our planet is inhabited by many dangerousbacteria and one of the most famous are Salmonella (Salmonella). They enter the organisms of people and animals through food, cover the intestinal walls and begin to release toxic substances. The disease eventually develops salmonellosisaccompanied by abdominal painfever, weakness, vomiting and other unpleasant symptoms. With proper treatment, the disease subsides in about a week, but there are cases that ended in death. In order not to become infected with these bacteria, it used to be enough to wash the food thoroughly. But now salmonella have become smarter and have learned to hide in the microscopic folds of plants. According to scientists, they cannot be washed off with a stream of water.
Salmonellosis is an acute intestinal infection of animals and humans, which is provoked by the bacteria Salmonella. These bacteria are considered one of the four main causes of diarrheal diseases worldwide.
Dangerous bacteria in food
About the new skill of pathogenic bacteria toldscientific publication Science Alert, with reference to the scientific journal Frontiers in Microbiology. Scientists from the American state of Delaware conducted several experiments in which they tested how pathogenic bacteria interact with various parts of plants. The experiment involved three types of bacteria:
- salmonella, capable of causing salmonellosis and typhoid fever;
- listeria, which cause listeriosis affecting the nervous system;
- Escherichia coli provoking the development of acute intestinal infections.
Watch for Listeria and Escherichia coliit was rather boring, but Salmonella scientists were very surprised. It turned out that at some point in time, they learned to penetrate the stomata - small holes on the surface of the leaves, through which plants breathe and evaporate moisture. The length of the stomata reaches 0.06 millimeters, so tiny bacteria may well sit in them tightly and hide from water and ultraviolet rays. It turns out that it is almost impossible to cleanse the leaves of edible plants from dangerous bacteria.
Indeed, scientists have no idea yet howoutsmart the suddenly wiser Salmonella. But the fact that American scientists have discovered a new way for bacteria to enter the organisms of humans and animals is great news. Researchers now know exactly where they should go to research to reduce the incidence of salmonellosis. But if the bacteria have become so cunning, the incidence may well increase dramatically.
Prevention of intestinal infections
But what is to be done? According to the scientific literature, it is impossible to detect the infection of plants with Salmonella bacteria by eye. Eating potentially dangerous lettuce leaves and other greens is also not very desirable. There is no particular point in washing and disinfecting them either - at least one can come to this conclusion after reading the results of scientific work. The situation seems difficult but, in fact, it is simply important for us to stay calm and follow the recommendations.

And so, at the moment, scientists know thatPlants can only become infected with Salmonella near farms and pastures. That is, if the same lettuce has grown in a garden bed far from cattle, there is nothing to be afraid of. But plants near places where animals feed, it is better to simply avoid them - perhaps those cunning bacteria have hidden in their leaves.
If Salmonella nevertheless managed to get intoorganism, the symptoms of salmonellosis make themselves felt within 12-24 hours. As a rule, the signs of the disease appear vividly: a person has a stomach ache, fever rises, his head buzzes, and in general he feels terrible. But sometimes the disease is asymptomatic, but a person runs the risk of infecting others with the disease. If an illness occurs, you should immediately consult a doctor - there is a cure for this unpleasant illness and the cure occurs in about a week.

Just don't think that now the plantsdoes not make sense to wash at all. They have to be and how - on this topic, my colleague Lyubov Sokovikova wrote a huge article that should be read by every person on our planet. The fact is that in addition to salmonella, other dangerous bacteria can also live in the leaves and contain poisonous substances. And yes, in addition to food, you also need to wash your hands regularly - especially in our difficult times.
