Positioning
All manufacturers compete in one way or another.with Apple, since the company's laptops are not the most massive in terms of sales in absolute terms, but in the high price segment they take the lion's share. In some countries, they also dominate the middle segment, for example, this is the case in Apple's home market, in America. Perhaps that is why, and quite imperceptibly, most companies borrowed from Apple the layout of the case, the keyboard and its course, and a number of other technical solutions. And Huawei is no exception. In both last year's and today's Matebook X Pro, we see borrowing the shape of one of the MacBook Pros, a number of solutions that are copied, and, perhaps, this is for the best. Good solutions are not a sin to copy, Apple never shunned this and collected everything they could reach from the market with a vacuum cleaner. Therefore, we can assume that the Matebook X Pro is a reading of the MacBook from Huawei, but coming out on Windows, with all the pluses and minuses of this system.
Inside Huawei's X Pro line of laptopsoccupies a special place, these are premium models, although some confusion may arise here, because the model itself has two versions - regular and premium. That is, premium from premium, it turns out premium squared.
Positioning Matebook X Pro - for those wholooking for an interesting design, case materials, high-quality screen, but at the same time does not need anything more than a regular laptop. This is not a workstation, but a familiar laptop for office work and a quiet pastime when you watch movies, read something on the net, parse mail or write texts. Don't let the large amount of memory bother you, it is needed here for a comfortable life, but it does not hint at performance, after all, there is no discrete graphics here.
The price is high, but good things cost a lot, andthis laptop (it's more correct to say "laptops", in the plural, since the models differ, and noticeably) in every sense belongs to the category of those. A premium computer that pleases with materials.
If we evaluate it in terms of last year'sMatebook X Pro, then, except for the processor, memory, no changes are observed, all the advantages and disadvantages are exactly the same. No one wants to change last year's model for a new one, which is understandable, they are very close.
Design, dimensions, connectors
I'll start with color solutions, there are exactly three of them.I like the white laptop, the case is velvet to the touch, both girls and men like it. The premium version really differs precisely in the feel of the case. I advise you to twist it in your hands in the store, you will understand what it is.
As soon as people hear about the velvety finish, they immediately imagine how it will peel off, a kind of base soft-touch. There is nothing close to it here, the magnesium alloy is processed so that there are no chips and scuffs. Moreover, a couple of times I wore a laptop along with newspapers, there were stains from printing ink on the case, but it is enough to swipe with a napkin and they are gone. And I like the execution of the case, it's excellent. The weight of the premium version is 1.26 kilograms, but the usual one in an aluminum case will already weigh 1.38 kilograms. At the same time, the dimensions differ slightly - 310 x 221 x 15.6 mm (Premium) and 310 x 221 x 15.5 mm (standard).
The one-handed top cover test is easy to pass, the center notch is comfortable, and the ergonomics are very pleasant.
In the closed state, if you look at the frontedge, you will see four microphones, but there are six speakers in the device, they are distributed over the body, but the sound comes mainly from under the screen and on the sides of the keyboard. The sound is good, bright and juicy.
On the left side is a 2-in-1 connector 3.5 mm, you can connect both a headset and a microphone here. Nearby are two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, they have corresponding icons, on the right side there are two USB connectors. And that, in fact, is all, there are no other connectors here. This is another argument in favor of the fact that the machine was created for everyday use, it does not have additional connectors.
The legs are rounded, the laptop stands well on them on any surface, does not slip.
In general, I have no complaints about the laptop in terms of materials and build quality. An excellent machine, which gives variety in relation to the same MacBook Pro, looks more interesting in its decisions.
Biometrics - face recognition, fingerprint sensor. Sleep and hibernation
I don’t know about you, but I have lost the habit of entering a password onkeyboard, face recognition (Windows Hello) or a fingerprint sensor. The latter is inscribed in the round on / off key on the right. Works fast, no complaints.
But I like to use Windows Hello whenThe IR light illuminates your face, the wink at the top edge of the screen lasts for a few seconds, and then it unlocks. It is not instant, there is time to gather your thoughts about what you will do on the laptop. There is not a grain of mockery in my words, I really think what exactly I want to do, I don’t rush somewhere headlong. On the same MacBook, I open the lid, and it instantly starts working, there is no waiting and the lock itself. But I still freeze and think, consider this my feature.
Facial recognition works great, it's not onwhat to complain. But now we need to move on to how sleep and hibernation modes differ. In Windows 11, they were smart about this, so different manufacturers may experience different behavior of devices, I’m talking specifically about Huawei.
With the lid open, the laptop enters the statesleep, just touch the keyboard or touchpad and it wakes up, a few seconds and you can work. Fast and efficient. Alas, I do not like to leave the lid open, poplar fluff flies from the windows, pollen, dust can collect. I don't have pets, but their owners are trained to keep the lid closed too.
This is where the hibernation mode begins in theory, butit looks, as for me, strange, as if the car is turning off. The start takes up to 15 seconds, all the components are loading before your eyes, see how it looks.
Spent several days experimenting with differentenergy consumption profiles, set certain settings, all to no avail: closed the lid - wait for a long load. I didn’t retrain, I close the lid, but such a long launch upsets me. Unfortunately, it does not lead to energy savings.
Battery, operating time
Find some average values of timework from the manufacturer failed, and it’s understandable - after all, there are a lot of variables, making some statements means incurring the wrath of those who will not get the same results for various reasons. The built-in Li-Pol battery has a capacity of 60 Wh, my premium version has a 90 W charger. Let's see how a laptop discharged to zero is charged with a standard charge.
Charging time Matebook X Pro, stock charger 90W | |
Time in minutes | Percent |
15 | 18 |
30 | 32 |
45 | 60 |
60 | 81 |
75 | 92 |
90 | 97 |
97 | 100 |
Starting from the 30th minute, the case noticeably warms up, the measurement shows that it heats up to 38 degrees (the temperature in the room is 22 degrees). Noticeably warm, but not sizzling.
Charging time does not raise questions, especially sincemost people work on the computer and it is charging in parallel. The beauty of modern laptops is that they have the ability to use third-party chargers (Power Delivery support is a great thing). But here a dissonance arises, for security reasons, the Matebook detects other people's chargers and, regardless of their power, lowers the charging speed. It's not critical, but it's worth knowing about. We’ll talk about another minus of third-party chargers in the performance section.
Get used to the fact that the MacBook does not consume energy inclosed state, the battery de facto is not discharged. The Matebook caught a strange behavior, it starts to turn the fans when no one touches it, nothing happens to it. Just suddenly they turn on, work for up to two minutes, and he falls asleep again. If at this moment you open the laptop, it turns out that it is turned off, the start will take those same 15 seconds.
It is impossible to understand the reasons for turning on the fan,all drivers are updated on the laptop, there are no programs that can even potentially wake it up. At the same time, on the days when he himself “works”, in the off state, the battery discharge is 2% (this is a lot), but there are days when this does not happen.
Now about the time of work.My use case is simple - a typewriter. The MacBook Pro has up to 16 hours of battery life, which is real time without any gimmicks, no need to shrink or anything like that. I was spoiled by the fact that the ARM processor pulls for so long and at the same time is quite productive.
In Matebook X Pro, it is the operating time from onecharging was kind of disappointing for me - from 4 to 6 hours at 80% brightness, I do not use the touch screen. There is not much data that is written to memory. Typewriter, and it's frustrating. But for many people, this will not be a problem, since they do not constantly fly across the Atlantic, do not sit with their eyes on the screen. Here, however, you still need to take into account that the number of charge / discharge cycles on this laptop will be greater for mobile use, but we'll talk about this somehow separately and in another material.
Display - sun, room, performance
You need to repeat the technical characteristics of the screen only so that you do not scroll through the review in search of:
- 14.2 inches, LTPS, 3:2 geometry, 3120x2080 pixels, 264 ppi, maximum brightness 500 nits, 1500:1, viewing angle 178 degrees
- Up to ten simultaneous touches
- Frequency 60/90 Hz
- Anti-glare coating (Premium version only)
It seems like 500 nits is not much, butten years ago, most laptops had a brightness of 250 nits, and then it was considered the norm (the same 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is exactly that). Therefore, the brightness of the screen will not be a drawback for most, it is very comfortable in any room, and there are no glare when working on a white background.
But as soon as a black background appears, you begin to be reflected in it, nothing can be done about it.
In the sun, the screen remains readable, but at an angle it reflects clouds or something else.
When looking directly at the screen, there is nothing like that, although it fades in direct sunlight, the picture is not as bright and juicy as it is outside. But there is nothing to complain about, most computers behave like this. The screen is excellent by any standards, it allows you to comfortably work with any kind of information - texts, videos, photos. Screen calibration is good, color reproduction does not suffer.
The display is touch and you can control Windowspressing, but I don’t like it at all, since fingerprints remain, the screen looks dirty after a short time (and it’s impossible to expand the laptop 180 degrees, turning it into a tablet). The kit does not include a stylus for working with the screen, so you will have to look for such an accessory separately. For most, a touch screen on a Windows laptop is a completely unnecessary thing, I think that it will be so here.

Processor, memory, performance
Let's start with memory, 16 GB RAM (in myvariant, in theory there are 32 GB machines, but it is not clear whether they will appear in Russia or not). Built-in memory 1 TB (exactly the same way there are 2 TB machines, it is not known whether we will have them). For a typewriter and Windows 11, this amount of memory is enough for the eyes, there is nothing to complain about - this is enough memory to fill it with your files and not think about cleaning the computer.
The main difference between X Pro 2023 is availablethirteenth generation Intel processor (i7 stands here). In my opinion, the choice of this processor occurred for one reason - it is accepted. Every year you need to install the latest processor without regard to the real need. The laptop in normal tasks often turns on the fan, it makes noise at low speeds, but this is due to the fact that the processor is heating up. On the case, the temperature is still the same 38 degrees, but, worse, the central part of the keyboard is heated, while on the sides it remains less warm. And when typing, it feels good, on other laptops there was no such effect.
I emphasize that this happens when working from the network, from the battery, in normal, not resource-intensive applications. But the heat sink is implemented in such a way that the temperature does not rise above 40 degrees even under heavy loads. And this is good, in the same MacBook Air 15 of 2023, under such loads, the case heats up to 46-48 degrees, which is already unacceptable.
Now let's deal with the modes of operation, laptop performance. By default, you have balanced mode enabled, the processor gets limited, the overall system performance is lower. What is proved in benchmarks.
Even if you want to turn on the performance mode (combination Fn + P), you will be denied this - they will offer to connect the power adapter.
When the adapter is connected, performance moderuns on 20% battery (below also does not turn on). Third-party adapters are sometimes perceived as not good enough, performance mode also does not start. And here the question arises - why the latest processor from Intel, if by default it works in a different mode, does not give out everything it is capable of. Yes, and when using charging, there are questions. Don't know.
And here is the performance in the mode without processor restrictions.
And a few more benchmarks for you to evaluate.
I would have preferred a colder stone, but toThe fan didn't come on very often. I think that the engineers in this case became hostages of marketers who wanted to show off the very best processor and did not think about the overall performance of the system. Woe from the mind.
Keyboard, touchpad - typing and more
For me, the quality of the keyboard is very important, becauseI type a lot of text a day, I directly physically feel any shortcomings, I perceive them painfully. The X Pro's keyboard is chic, with 1.5mm of key travel, they lock in well, and the keyboard is ideal for touch typing. A huge plus is that anyone who has worked on old MacBooks with a scissor mechanism will feel that this is the same keyboard (we are talking, of course, about 13-inch machines).
The backlighting of the keys is pleasant, in most casesshe is not needed. In a word, you can sincerely love this laptop for the keyboard, it is chic. Of course, there is a fair amount of my habits, subjectivity - there are people who are used to other keyboards, and it is difficult for them to relearn. But my experience is just that.
The touchpad is huge, Huawei added a wholeset of additional gestures. For example, you can swipe along one of the edges and adjust the speaker volume, adjust the screen brightness differently, and so on. Take a screenshot by tapping. For "heavy" users who are exploring the possibilities of technology, this is a nice addition.
The size of the touchpad and its softness make it possible to work comfortably in any applications, so the engineers should also be praised for it, everything is fine here.
Camera and video conferencing
One of the main complaints about the previous X Pro was the quality of the camera (720p), the picture is soapy, sometimes crumbling. Unfortunately, nothing has changed here, the picture is exactly the same. See for yourself.
And now look at the picture from the late 2020 MacBook Pro, where the camera is still the previous generation and frankly miserable, but it still wins.
Huawei made a lot of modes for the camera, she knows how to frame you, add more space, there are effects to improve the picture and your face. But the problem here is that all this is pointless, the quality of the camera kills the idea completely. In 2023, such a camera may be in budget laptops, but not in this model.
At the same time, the sound quality is amazing, the interlocutor hears you as if you were next to him. This is such an incomprehensible imbalance that nothing can explain.
Impression
I will not dwell separately on Windowsmany people know and even love this system (however, just like MacOS, although, in my opinion, the ideal does not exist - there are drawbacks both there and there). I will also skip proprietary utilities from Huawei, they do not change the perception of the device much, although for those who use Huawei tablets and smartphones, they expand their capabilities and create a single space for work.
The price of the regular version of the laptop is from 144 thousandrubles, premium - from 157 thousand. In my opinion, you should not waste time on trifles, but choose the premium option right away, it is definitely more interesting, and the savings within such amounts are almost a penny.
But then the question arises, who can likesimilar laptop. To begin with, these are Windows users, the choice is obvious here. The second statement is those who are not ready to buy a 14-inch MacBook Pro, since the cost starts from 250 thousand rubles. And this is too much, even if there are advantages (the amount of memory took into account exactly the same). In the gray market, the price difference will remain, so I do not consider this option.
There is a huge selection in the Windows laptop market, especially if you close your eyes to the body materials, the price range will be large. But why and why turn a blind eye to design, body materials, screen quality? Overall, the 2023 X Pro is a premium laptop, despite runtime, camera, heat, and the like. You need to know about them, but the display, keyboard, good speakers - all this is a plus for the model. Look and evaluate what exactly you need, how critical the existing shortcomings are. It is possible that you will choose the previous model, which differs only in the processor version and in the price, which is 10-20 thousand rubles lower.
ARM vs. Intel, Windows vs. MacOS - Laptop Differences
Why the ARM-based MacBook doubles down on a premium Windows laptop with the latest Intel processor - I grumble about some obvious points and usability.
