In the 19th century, English naturalist Charles Darwin(Charles Darwin) made his great trip around the world. He made one of the greatest discoveries in the Galapagos Islands, which are located in the Pacific Ocean. The so-called Galapagos consists of 13 volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 cliffs. In the course of exploring the surroundings, the traveler managed to discover a huge variety of living things and it was there that he began to work on his theory of evolution. At the moment, the Galapagos Islands are considered the "reserve of the world biosphere", because the largest number of animals of completely different species live there. Exploration of the rich in living creatures is underway even today, and recently scientists from the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) reported the discovery of 30 new deep-sea creatures. To find them, the researchers needed modern equipment.
Deep sea exploration
About new species living deep under watercreatures told Science Alert. The search for new animals was carried out near the Darwin and Wolf Islands in the northern part of the archipelago. Scientists were especially interested in the area on which there are three seamounts with steep slopes. In the course of numerous observations, it was found that a lot of dangerous sharks live in this area. Plus, it's very deep there. Taking these two facts into account, the researchers decided to explore the area using remotely controlled vehicles, also known as ROVs.
The expedition used two vehiclesunder the names Argus and Hercules. They descended to a depth of 3400 meters from the huge research vessel Nautilus, which is as much as 64 meters in length. According to the marine scientist Pelayo Salinas de Leon, the explored mountains are still untouched by people. And all because they are located in the Galapagos nature reserve and are protected from fishing and deep-sea mining. The Charles Darwin Foundation wants to be careful to ensure that these areas remain intact. Otherwise, our descendants will not know a single intact place.
New species of animals
The researchers admitted that they had no idea withwhat kind of animals they might encounter. Let's say, with the help of deep-sea vehicles, they could see some kind of lobster. They would not be able to quickly recognize if it is a new species or a representative of already discovered varieties. Therefore, the video from the cameras of deep-sea vehicles was broadcast to the home computers of truly experienced biologists, who were able to quickly recognize animal species by mere appearance. As soon as interesting objects appeared in the frame, they advised the study authors to take a closer look. Thanks to this teamwork, the researchers were able to discover 30 life forms that were previously unknown to science.
So, thanks to the Argus and Hercules devices, the researchers were able to discover:
- 10 new varieties of bamboo coral (Isididae);
- 4 varieties of octocorallia eight-pointed corals;
- 1 new species of snaketail (Ophiuroidea);
- 4 varieties of squat lobster (Galatheoidea).
